bas-reliefs

Shallow projecting carvings

Bas-reliefs is the plural of bas-relief, a type of sculpture in which figures project slightly from a flat background.

The French term (pronounced with a silent s) literally means "low relief," distinguishing it from high relief where figures stand out more dramatically.

Ancient Egyptian carvings and coin faces are typical examples: The temple walls were covered in bas-reliefs depicting battle scenes.
