monumental statues
Towering carved figures
Monumental statues are large-scale sculptural representations, typically of human figures, designed to commemorate historical events, honor notable individuals, or embody cultural ideals.
The term emphasizes impressive size and public presence—these stand in plazas, parks, and government buildings rather than private collections.
The city debated removing its monumental statues of Confederate generals.
The adjective monumental can apply to any statue of imposing scale, though the phrase often carries connotations of official commemoration and the political controversies that surround it.
