Incised gem designs

Intaglios is the plural of intaglio, a design carved or engraved into a surface so that the image sits below the surrounding material—the opposite of a relief or cameo.

The term applies to engraved gems, certain printmaking techniques where ink fills incised lines, and decorative carvings in stone or metal: a collection of Roman intaglios, The museum displayed Renaissance intaglios alongside cameos.
