bale out

Jump from plane

Bale out is a British spelling variant of bail out.

The meanings are the same: to jump from an aircraft in an emergency, to rescue someone from difficulty, or to remove water from a boat.

American English strongly prefers bail out for all senses; British English sometimes uses bale for the aircraft sense: The pilot baled out over the Channel.
