boll
Seed-bearing pod
A boll is the rounded seed pod of certain plants, especially cotton and flax.
Cotton bolls split open when mature to reveal the fluffy white fibers inside: The fields were white with open bolls.
The boll weevil, a beetle that devastated American cotton crops in the early twentieth century, feeds on cotton bolls.
