chiral auxiliary
Asymmetry-inducing attachment
A chiral auxiliary is a compound temporarily attached to a molecule to control the three-dimensional arrangement of atoms during a chemical reaction.
Once the desired configuration is achieved, the auxiliary is removed and can often be reused.
The technique allows chemists to produce molecules with specific handedness—essential in pharmaceuticals where mirror-image versions of drugs may have different effects.
