hope chest

Bride's storage box

A hope chest is a wooden chest or trunk where a young woman traditionally stored items—linens, dishes, quilts—in anticipation of marriage and setting up a household.

The practice has largely faded, but the term persists for any chest used to collect keepsakes or future household goods: Her grandmother's hope chest held hand-embroidered pillowcases.

Also called a cedar chest or trousseau chest.
