krater
Ancient wine bowl
A krater is a large ancient Greek vessel used for mixing wine with water before serving.
Wide-mouthed and typically decorated with painted scenes, kraters were central to the symposium—the Greek drinking party.
The word also appears in astronomy for bowl-shaped depressions, as in lunar craters, though crater is now the standard spelling for that sense.
