alphorn
Mountain valley instrument
An alphorn is a long wooden horn, traditionally used by Swiss herders to call cattle and communicate across mountain valleys.
The instrument, typically six to twelve feet long, produces a limited range of deep, resonant tones.
Its distinctive sound has become emblematic of Alpine culture: The alphorn echoed across the valley.
