alphorns

Mountain valley instruments

Alphorns are long wooden horns traditionally used in the Swiss Alps, typically eight to twelve feet long and curved at the bell end.

Herders originally used them to call cattle and communicate across mountain valleys.

The instrument produces deep, resonant tones and has become a symbol of Swiss folk culture: The alphorn echoed across the meadow.
