mintmarks

Currency origin symbols

Mintmarks are small letters or symbols on coins indicating where they were produced.

The United States Mint uses letters like D for Denver, S for San Francisco, and P for Philadelphia.

Collectors pay close attention to mintmarks because coins from certain mints in certain years can be far more valuable than others: I found a 1916-D Mercury dime—that's a rare mintmark.
