allopathy
Mainstream medical practice
Allopathy is conventional Western medicine—treatment that uses drugs or surgery to counteract symptoms or disease.
The term was coined by homeopathy's founder to distinguish mainstream medicine from his own system, which treats "like with like." Allopathy remains common in discussions contrasting conventional and alternative approaches: Allopathic doctors often dismiss homeopathic remedies.
