alkaline earth

Beryllium's periodic family

Alkaline earth refers to any of six metallic elements in the second column of the periodic table: beryllium, magnesium, calcium, strontium, barium, and radium.

These elements share chemical properties—they form alkaline (basic) solutions and occur naturally in earth minerals.

Calcium and magnesium are the most familiar: Alkaline earth metals are essential for bone health.
