hydroxides
OH-containing ionic substances
Hydroxides are chemical compounds containing the hydroxyl group (OH)—one oxygen atom bonded to one hydrogen atom.
Most familiar are metal hydroxides like sodium hydroxide (lye) and calcium hydroxide (slaked lime), which are strongly alkaline bases.
The hydroxides in drain cleaner dissolve organic matter.
In chemistry, hydroxide also refers to the negatively charged ion OH⁻ itself.
