alkalines

Bases, not acids

Alkalines are alkaline batteries—the common disposable batteries used in flashlights, remote controls, and other household devices.

The term distinguishes them from rechargeable batteries: I need to pick up some alkalines for the smoke detector.

Less commonly, alkalines refers to alkaline substances generally—those with a pH above 7.
