new age
Recent time period
New age describes a broad cultural movement emphasizing spirituality, holistic health, and alternative practices outside mainstream religion and medicine.
It encompasses things like crystal healing, astrology, meditation, and belief in cosmic consciousness: She's into new age stuff like tarot and energy work.
The term often carries a whiff of the unscientific or credulous.
As a music genre, new age refers to soft, ambient, often synthesizer-based instrumental music intended for relaxation or meditation. (Capitalized New Age is the more formal designation.)
