reharmonization
New harmonic foundation
Reharmonization is the technique of changing the chords that accompany a melody while keeping the melody intact.
Jazz musicians routinely reharmonize standards, substituting richer or more surprising chord progressions for the original harmony: His reharmonization of "Autumn Leaves" made it almost unrecognizable.
The practice can refresh familiar tunes or showcase harmonic sophistication.
