hot-swap
Replace without rebooting
Hot-swap means to replace a component while a system remains powered and running, without shutting down first.
The term comes from computing, where hot-swappable drives or batteries can be removed and inserted without interrupting operation: The server supports hot-swappable hard drives.
The concept extends to any situation where substitution happens on the fly: We hot-swapped the guitarist mid-set when he broke a string.
