acetyl

Two-carbon functional group

Acetyl is a chemical group consisting of a carbon atom double-bonded to oxygen and single-bonded to a methyl group.

It appears throughout organic chemistry and biochemistry: acetylcholine is a neurotransmitter, acetylsalicylic acid is aspirin.

To acetylate is to add this group to a molecule.
