acclimatizing

Adjusting to conditions

Acclimatizing is the process of adjusting to new conditions, especially climate or altitude.

Travelers acclimatize to time zones, mountaineers to thin air, newcomers to unfamiliar social environments.

The adjustment is gradual: We spent two days acclimatizing before attempting the summit.

Also spelled acclimatising in British English.
