naturalizing

Granting citizenship status

Naturalizing is the process of making something seem natural or native.

In citizenship, it means granting nationality to a foreign-born person: She's naturalizing after ten years of residency.

In gardening, naturalizing refers to establishing plants so they spread and persist without cultivation: We're naturalizing daffodils in the meadow.

The word also describes adapting foreign words or customs until they feel native.
