habituating

Becoming accustomed to

Habituating is the present participle of habituate, meaning to make or become accustomed to something through repeated exposure.

The process works in two directions: you can habituate yourself to cold showers, or prolonged noise can habituate you to ignoring it.

In psychology, habituating specifically describes the diminishing of a response to a stimulus after repeated presentations.

The mice were habituating to the laboratory environment before testing began.
