William Wallace

Medieval Scottish insurgent

William Wallace was a Scottish knight who led resistance against English rule in the late thirteenth century.

His victory at the Battle of Stirling Bridge made him a symbol of Scottish independence.

Captured and executed by the English in 1305, Wallace became a national hero whose legend grew over centuries.

The 1995 film *Braveheart* renewed popular interest in his story, though it took considerable liberties with history.
