critical theory
Ideology unmasking framework
Critical theory is an approach to analyzing society that questions power structures, cultural assumptions, and systemic inequalities.
Originating with the Frankfurt School in the 1930s, it examines how dominant ideologies shape institutions and perpetuate oppression.
The term now encompasses various academic frameworks—feminist theory, postcolonial theory, queer theory—that critique social norms and advocate for change.
In political discourse, critical theory often appears as shorthand for progressive academic perspectives, sometimes used dismissively: They blamed critical theory for everything wrong with universities.
