Fritz Lang

Fritz Lang (1890–1976) was an Austrian-American filmmaker whose German expressionist works shaped cinema's visual vocabulary.

His silent epic *Metropolis* (1927) defined science fiction aesthetics, while *M* (1931) pioneered the serial killer genre.

After fleeing Nazi Germany, he directed Hollywood noir and westerns.

Lang's stark lighting, geometric compositions, and themes of fate and surveillance influenced generations of filmmakers.
