Union soldiers
Northern Civil War troops
Union soldiers were troops who fought for the United States (the Union) during the American Civil War (1861–1865), opposing the Confederate forces of the seceding Southern states.
The term distinguishes Northern military personnel from their Confederate counterparts: His great-great-grandfather served as a Union soldier at Gettysburg.
