Southern soldiers
Dixie's armed forces
Confederate soldiers who fought for the South during the American Civil War (1861–1865).
The term appears in historical writing and period accounts as a neutral descriptor, avoiding the political weight of "Confederate" or "rebel": Southern soldiers defended the ridge until nightfall.
Sometimes used more broadly for any military forces from the American South.
