Citizens demanding representation
A democracy movement is an organized effort to establish or expand democratic governance—typically demanding free elections, civil liberties, or an end to authoritarian rule.
The term often describes sustained campaigns against repressive regimes: the pro-democracy movement in Hong Kong, democracy movements across Eastern Europe in 1989.
Participants may face imprisonment or violence.
