Slaughterhouse-Five
Dresden bombing novel
Slaughterhouse-Five is a 1969 novel by Kurt Vonnegut about Billy Pilgrim, a World War II soldier who becomes "unstuck in time." The title refers to the Dresden slaughterhouse where Pilgrim (and Vonnegut himself) survived the Allied firebombing as a prisoner of war.
The book blends science fiction with antiwar themes, structured around the refrain "So it goes" after each death.
It remains one of the most influential American novels of the twentieth century.
