Sergeant York
War hero rank-name
Sergeant York refers to Alvin C.
York, an American soldier who became one of the most decorated heroes of World War I after single-handedly killing 25 German soldiers and capturing 132 others in 1918.
The name has become shorthand for unlikely heroism—a backwoods Tennessee pacifist turned fearsome warrior.
A 1941 film starring Gary Cooper cemented the legend: He went full Sergeant York on them.
