Shinkansen

Japan's speed rail

Shinkansen is Japan's high-speed rail network, known in English as the bullet train.

The name means "new trunk line" in Japanese.

First opened in 1964 between Tokyo and Osaka, the system is renowned for its speed, punctuality, and safety record: We took the Shinkansen from Kyoto to Hiroshima.

The term sometimes refers to any Japanese bullet train or the trains themselves rather than the network.
