SS troops
Hitler's elite guard
SS troops were members of the Schutzstaffel, the paramilitary organization of Nazi Germany that operated concentration camps and committed mass atrocities during World War II.
Originally Hitler's personal bodyguard, the SS expanded into a vast apparatus of terror and genocide.
The term appears in historical accounts of the Holocaust and Nazi occupation: SS troops rounded up civilians for deportation.
In figurative use, comparing someone to SS troops accuses them of brutal, fascistic behavior.
