Rutherford B. Hayes

Post-Reconstruction era leader

Rutherford B.

Hayes was the nineteenth president of the United States, serving from 1877 to 1881.

His contested election, decided by a congressional commission, ended Reconstruction when federal troops withdrew from the South as part of the compromise that secured his victory.

Hayes is remembered as an honest but forgettable one-term president who pledged not to seek reelection.
