brevet

Rank without raise

A brevet is a military commission granting an officer a higher rank without the corresponding pay or full authority—typically awarded for gallantry or distinguished service.

The practice was common in the 19th century: He received a brevet promotion to colonel after the battle.

As a verb, to brevet someone is to grant such a commission.

The term occasionally appears in other contexts for honorary or temporary titles.
