Palais-Royal

Historic Paris complex

The Palais-Royal is a historic palace and garden complex in central Paris, originally built for Cardinal Richelieu in the 17th century.

Its arcaded galleries became famous for shops, cafés, and gambling houses—a center of Parisian social life and intrigue.

Today it houses government offices and remains a landmark: We walked through the Palais-Royal on our way to the Louvre.
