black sand beaches
Dark volcanic shores
Black sand beaches are shorelines where the sand is dark gray or black, typically from volcanic rock that has eroded into fine particles.
Found near volcanoes in Hawaii, Iceland, and elsewhere, the sand often comes from basalt.
The dramatic contrast with ocean waves makes them popular tourist destinations: We spent the afternoon at a black sand beach on the Big Island.
