Michaelmas

September saint's day

Michaelmas is the Christian feast of Saint Michael the Archangel, celebrated on September 29th.

In British tradition, it marks one of the quarter days—dates when rents came due and contracts began or ended.

The word persists in institutional contexts: Michaelmas term is the autumn academic term at Oxford, Cambridge, and some law courts.
