moveable feast

Date-shifting holiday

A moveable feast is a religious holiday that falls on different calendar dates each year, calculated by formulas rather than fixed to a date.

Easter is the prime example, shifting annually based on lunar cycles.

The phrase extends to any occasion without a set time: Thanksgiving dinner at our house is a moveable feast—whenever everyone can make it.

Hemingway's memoir *A Moveable Feast* gave the phrase literary currency, suggesting something portable yet nourishing.

Also spelled movable feast.
