McMurdo

Polar research base

McMurdo is the largest research station in Antarctica, operated by the United States on Ross Island.

It functions as a logistics hub for scientific expeditions to the continent's interior: She spent a winter at McMurdo studying penguin populations.

The name derives from McMurdo Sound, the adjacent body of water named for a British naval officer.
