field camp
Temporary wilderness base
A field camp is a temporary base established in a remote location for research, exploration, or training.
Scientists set up field camps to study geology, wildlife, or archaeology; military units use them for exercises.
The term is especially common in academic contexts: She spent six weeks at a field camp in Alaska collecting soil samples.
Unlike permanent facilities, field camps are meant to be packed up when the work is done.
