Max Ernst

Surrealist collage pioneer

Max Ernst (1891–1976) was a German-born artist who helped found both Dada and Surrealism.

He pioneered techniques like frottage (rubbing) and grattage (scraping) to generate unexpected images from chance textures.

His dreamlike paintings, collages, and sculptures drew on psychoanalytic ideas about the unconscious: Ernst's collage novels remain touchstones of Surrealist art.
