Pre-Raphaelites

Medieval-inspired British painters

The Pre-Raphaelites were a group of English painters and poets formed in 1848 who rejected the academic conventions dominant since the High Renaissance, seeking instead the vivid color, intricate detail, and spiritual sincerity they saw in art before Raphael.

The movement included Dante Gabriel Rossetti, John Everett Millais, and William Holman Hunt.

Their influence extended to poetry and decorative arts.

Pre-Raphaelite now describes art with similar qualities—medieval subjects, lush detail, dreamlike atmosphere: Her flowing red hair looked Pre-Raphaelite.
