Mason-Dixon

Surveyors' famous boundary

The Mason-Dixon line is the boundary between Pennsylvania and Maryland, surveyed in the 1760s by Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon.

It came to represent the division between free Northern states and slaveholding Southern states before the Civil War.

The term still evokes the cultural divide between North and South: south of the Mason-Dixon line.
