Freedom Day
End of oppression
Freedom Day is a national holiday commemorating liberation from oppression, celebrated in different countries on different dates.
In South Africa, it marks the first post-apartheid elections on April 27, 1994.
In the United States, some states observe Juneteenth as Freedom Day, marking the end of slavery.
The term has also been adopted ironically or politically to mark the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions.
Freedom Day celebrations included speeches and parades throughout the capital.
