Jewish quarters
Historic segregated neighborhoods
Jewish quarters are neighborhoods in cities historically designated for or predominantly inhabited by Jewish residents.
Some arose organically as communities gathered near synagogues; others resulted from laws restricting where Jews could live.
Many European cities retain areas called Jewish quarters long after such restrictions ended, now often tourist destinations: We walked through Prague's Jewish quarter.
The term overlaps with ghetto, though ghetto more strongly implies forced segregation.
