walled city
Rampart-ringed urban center
A walled city is an urban settlement enclosed by defensive walls, historically built for protection against invasion.
The term evokes medieval fortifications and ancient civilizations: Jerusalem's Old City remains a walled city.
Today it often describes historic urban cores preserved within their original fortifications, or appears metaphorically for any insular, self-contained community.
