Imperial Rome
Ancient Mediterranean superpower
Imperial Rome refers to the Roman state during the period of rule by emperors, roughly from Augustus in 27 BCE through the fall of the Western Empire in 476 CE.
The term distinguishes this era from the earlier Roman Republic.
It also describes the city itself during this period, or the culture, architecture, and power structures characteristic of the empire at its height: The ruins evoke the grandeur of Imperial Rome.
