barbarian kingdoms
Germanic successor realms
Barbarian kingdoms were the successor states that emerged across Western Europe after the collapse of the Roman Empire in the fifth century, founded by Germanic and other peoples the Romans had labeled "barbarians." These included the Visigoths in Spain, the Ostrogoths and later Lombards in Italy, the Franks in Gaul, and the Vandals in North Africa.
Despite the term's connotations, these kingdoms often preserved Roman administrative practices and blended Germanic customs with Latin culture, forming the political foundation of medieval Europe.
