Arch

Missouri's famous landmark

An arch is a curved structure spanning an opening, typically supporting weight above it—doorways, bridges, windows.

The shape extends to anything curved similarly: the arch of the foot, the arch of an eyebrow.

As a verb, to arch is to form this curve: The cat arched its back.

Separately, arch as an adjective means playfully teasing or self-consciously clever: an arch smile, an arch tone.

This sense suggests someone performing their own cleverness.
