affricate

Stop-then-friction sound

An affricate is a consonant sound that begins as a stop (airflow completely blocked) and releases into a fricative (airflow partially blocked with friction).

English has two: the "ch" in church and the "j" in judge.

The term comes from Latin for "to rub against."
